Americanah HBO Max series release date, cast, plot and is Americanah true story?

Americanah is an upcoming HBO series based on the book by Chimamanda Nagozi Adichi. It follows the journey of a young Nigerian girl, who visits America to attend college in hope for better life and how she is disappointed. 

The miniseries is written by Danai Gurira, we know her from the role in Black Panther as Okoye. While Chinonye Chukwu, a Nigerian-American film directer, will be directing the series.

When is it releasing?

The filming of Americanah was set to begin on March 2020, but due to ongoing pandemic production has slowed down. According to Variety, Americanah miniseries was confirmed by HBO in September, last year. 

As the pandemic is creating havoc on everything, we are yet to know the release date of the series. No announcement has made till now by any production or publication.

However, we are hoping to see the series releasing at the onset of 2021.

  • Lupita Nyong’o as Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman, who travels to America in hope for better life and education.
  • Zackary Momoh as Obinze, born and raised in Nigeria, he loves reading book.
  • Uzo Aduba as Aunty Uju, she acts as Ifemelu’s older sister.
  • Corey Hawkins as Blaine, Ifemelu’s second American boyfriend, who works as a professor at Yale.
  • Tireni Oyenusi as Dike, he is Uju  and general’s son, who moves to America with his mother

What is the plot of Americanah?

The miniseries is based on a book by Chimamanda Nagozi Adichi, the plot of book follows Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman, who excels in her studies and shows a promising future as a student. She falls in love with her classmate named Obinze. During that time Nigeria was under military dictatorship and people were leaving their country. So, Ifemelu and Obinze decides to go to America to have better future. Ifemelu makes it to the America but Obinze’s visa is denied due to 9/11 attacks. Obinze then moves to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education. Both becomes successful in their life, so when they return to Nigeria both consider reviving a relationship, that was broken apart long time ago.

Is Americanah true story?

Chimamanda Nagozi Adichi, author of the series, denied that Ifemelu, main female protagonist, is her autobiographical representation. 

During her interview with ebony.com, she agreed to the point that there’s a lot of her in Obinze, male protagonist of the series.

“I think Obinze is an idealized character for me. He is also her ideal perfect man. Obinze is my idealized male self.” 

Why does Ifemelu go back to Nigeria?

Ifemelu decides to go back to Nigeria because America didn’t feel like at home. In the United States, she often faced racism and many varieties of racial distinction. After arriving in the United States she realized what was like to be a “Black Person” in America.
